Cannabis contains at least 489 chemical constituents, 100 of which are Phytocannabinoids. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that activate the Cannabinoid receptors found throughout our bodies. These receptors are part of the Endocannabinoid System, which is one of the body’s largest neurotransmitter networks. 

There are two main types of Cannabinoids

  1. The first Cannabinoids are called Endocannabinoids, these are produced naturally by the human body.
  2. The second kind are called Phytocannabinoids, the Cannabis plant produces these naturally. Both cannabinoids in my opinion are essential for the human body to provide healing to itself from internal malfunctions. 

ENDOCANNABINOIDS

Endocannabinoid molecules are called Anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol or 2-AG. Found in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune system, they bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Besides telling the affected area how to feel and act, they also regulate bodily functions in the immune, nervous and gastrointestinal systems.

Discovered in 1992, the N-arachidonoylethanolamide or anandamide is a neurotransmitter derived from arachidonic acid, a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid. Anandamide is one of the most important of the Endocannabinoids, the compounds produced within the body that bind to cannabinoid receptors in the brain and elsewhere.

2-Arachidonoylglycerol

While Anandamide and 2‑arachidonoylglycerol interact with each other to regulate certain processes, it is 2‑arachidonoylglycerol that is believed to regulate the transmission of signals across synapses in the brain. Growing evidence shows that 2-AG is involved in the pathogenesis of various shocks and atherosclerosis. It is also responsible for regulating food intake and energy metabolism, and modulating anxiety and depression. In addition, 2-arachidonoylglycerol is a proven mediator of inflammatory reactions and immune responses, and it can reduce pain.

PHYTOCANNABINOIDS

Cannabis contains at least 489 chemical constituents, of which more than 100 are Phytocannabinoids. THC and CBD are the main constituents of cannabis. THC activates both CB1 and CB2 receptors while CBD does not directly bind to these receptors but it has the ability to get the body to release endocannabinoid such as Anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol or 2-AG

The Effects of Phytocannabinoids

The effects of cannabinoids on emotional, cognitive and psychomotor function vary according to the experience of users and their condition at the time of consuming the drug. The most marked psychological effects of THC can be divided into four groups.
1. Affective (euphoria, cheerfulness)
2. Sensoric (increased perception of external stimuli and one’s own body)

Phytocannabinoid Profiles

Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THC-A) Like other acid cannabinoids, it is not psychoactive. Further, THC-A is anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour, encourages appetite, combats insomnia and is antispasmodic.

CBD-A) is both anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour

One of the three compounds synthesized by the Cannabis plant, CBC-A is anti-inflammatory, weakly anti-fungal and strongly anti-bacterial.

Cannabigerolic acid is considered to be the ‘mother’ of all Cannabinoids. Transformed by the mother plant into all the other cannabinoids, it is the direct parent compound of CBG, a rare neuro-regenerative medicinal compound.
